Pressure-sensitive adhesives (often known by the abbreviation HMPSA) are a special type of hotmelt adhesive. Unlike other adhesive solutions, they remain permanently tacky even after cooling, even though they are physically cured. The base is typically thermoplastic rubber. While the exact composition may vary depending on the application, they are generally oil-based and solvent-free.
Conventional hotmelt adhesives harden and become rigid after curing. In contrast, pressure-sensitive adhesives remain tacky even after cooling. To form a permanent bond between the adhesive and the materials, a certain amount of pressure is needed during the application process.
The unique characteristics of pressure-sensitive adhesives become apparent during processing. The adhesives are applied in a liquid state. After application, you have the option to bond the parts either immediately or at a later time. Since the tacky properties remain, these special adhesives are ideal as a pre-coating.
